Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
